Joe on Gilmore Girls

Joe Pernice’s passionate and poignant portrayal of a would-be town troubadour seeking fame and fortune in the fictional hamlet of Stars Hollow, CT airs this Tuesday, May 9 on the WB. (Yes, I know it’s on against American Idol, because in a cruel twist of irony, in my gainfully – as opposed to Ashmont Records – employed life, I do publicity for, among others, the Boston Conservatory, which of course spawned the lovely Katherine McPhee – AND Constantine Maroulis. Poor Joe lives in the shadow of Kat and Constantine on a number of levels). He (Joe, not Constantine) sings part of “Amazing Glow.” He did, in fact, visit hair and makeup on the set, but according to an interview he did with The Boston Globe, they felt no need to mess with his appearance. I learn everything I know about Joe from The Boston Globe. That subscription has paid for itself time and time again.

In what might become a career pinnacle, Joe’s name is in the Tivo blurb. My sister called from Braintree to tell me about it. (I have Replay, and he didn’t make that one.)

The record is, I am told, coming along very nicely. JP describes it as “a more muscular “Overcome By Happiness,” which I think sounds kind of gross. You’d think a poet would come up with something more lyrical. Joe is taking a working break right now, co-laboring with Michael Deming on producing the new Jim White record. Then they’ll get back to work on the Pernice record. I have no idea when it will come out, but if I had to guess I would say that it will happen before the statewide Massachusetts primary elections this year. (Go look it up.) As long as it comes out before June 2007, I’ll feel like we’ve broken the vicious cycle of the every-other-year release we seem to be stuck in.

That’s it for now. It’s a nice day in Dorchester, so Charlie and I are off to see how many ticks we can acquire today.
